The European “AWARD” project is dedicated to the automation of heavy vehicles in logistics operations. It is composed of a consortium of 29 European partners in 12 countries, of which CARA is a member, and is led by Easymile, a CARA member.

This large-scale project is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme to the tune of €26 million. It started on 1 January 2021 and will end on 31 December 2023.

AWARD will develop and enable an autonomous transport system in a wide range of real-life situations and scenarios. The project will develop an Assistant Driver System (ADS) able to deal with adverse environmental conditions such as heavy rain, snow and fog.

The CARA contribution

CARA is involved in 4 work packages :

  • Testing, methodology & evaluation
  • Economic viability, definition of new business models and regulatory frameworks
  • Communication, dissemination
  • Project management

The “Communication and dissemination” workpackage

To this end, CARA will be holding two conferences related to the project:

  • A conference at SOLUTRANS, on 22 November, where there will be 5 presentations on the project
  • A final project conference, the venue to be determined shortly.

In this workpackage, CARA is also working on the Training and Education programme: the aim is to recover inputs from teachers and researchers (who need the information), but also from industry (who have the information). We will be using two means of recovering inputs:

  • A support model for a course aimed at secondary school students
  • A webinar for researchers on the use of autonomous vehicles.
